Dog Adoption. Are you thinking about getting a new dog?

Posted on 16 September 2011 by petmyforum

There are several factors to consider before you bring a dog into your home. If so, there are several things you should consider when getting a dog including:

1. Are you ready for a dog?
2. Do you have enough money for a dog?
3. When is the wrong time to get a dog?
4. What kind of dog should you get?
5. What age is best for you?
6. Where do you get your dog?
7. Is adoption right for you?
8. What’s in an adoption contract?
9. How do I choose between dogs?
10. How do I plan to include the dog in my home?
11. What do I need before taking my new dog home?

ANIMAL REFUGE KANSAI JAPAN

Posted on 12 June 2011 by petmyforum

I received an email from Elizabeth Oliver, she living at Japan. I was donated USD5 to ANIMAL REFUGE KANSAI JAPAN. I was feel great had an email from her.  She said we experienced the Kobe earthquake in 1995 and in that one year took in 600 animals. That experience has helped us this time although the scale of the disaster is enormous, compounded by the tsunami and the threat of radiation from the crippled nuclear plant. Kobe is only two hours drive from here but Tohoku is in the north of Japan, a day’s drive away, this hindered too by lack of petrol. We have had two boys from our staff up there rescuing, visiting local government offices for radiation screening, and then meeting up with volunteers from our Tokyo office. The animals are then taken to Tokyo Haneda airport and flown to Osaka Itami, where we pick them up. As of 29th May, 197 dogs, 17 cats, a guinea pig, rabbit and a masked love bird have come in here. Once at Osaka ARK, they are processed fairly quickly by our resident vet; de-wormed, vaccinated, blood tested for heart worm, microchipped and neutered. We send details of the animals with photos back to the local authorities to try to find owners. Already several have found their owners and those will be boarded are ARK until they are in a place where they can take their pets back.

Japanese Government will allow one or two family members, after 8th May to enter the 20k zone to collect personal possessions. When this was announced the government said they would not allow people to take out pets or animals of any kind. We put together a petition in Japanese and English and a wonderful volunteer even translated it into French. 77 organisations in Japan and another 350 organizations around the world signed it and individuals all around the world printed it out, signed it and sent it to a group of Japanese officials. After the petition campaigns from ARK and other animals welfare groups and a protest in Shibuya they have now announced that they will be allowing owners to take out their pets and that any animals found left in yards and homes will be brought out my officials. We are hopeful they will hold to their word but we will have to see what happens. We are afraid that any animals that have not had an owner sneaking into the zone to feed them is long since dead by now. What is needed now is for animal rescue groups to be allowed in to catch the loose animals or we will surely have a large feral population within a year as most of the animals are not spayed or neutered.

So you can see it is quite a lengthy process. We promise to board all these animals for free as well as giving all veterinary treatment and care for free. If we have no contact from owners or can’t find, after three months, the animals become the property of ARK and can be put up for adoption.

Thinking have a new pet?

Posted on 27 March 2009 by petmyforum

You’re thinking about adding a new puppy to your family, why not consider adopting one from a local animal shelter or you city Pound?

Most pounds and rescues are overflowing with dogs in desperate need of a loving home. You may think that only older or ‘problem’ dogs end up in shelters, but you’d be wrong!

Many older puppies and adolescent dogs (between 9 and 12 months of age) are surrendered to shelters every day. And often ‘oops’ litters (unexpected or unwanted puppies) or abandoned mama-dogs or litters, end up there too. Even purebred dogs and puppies can be found in animal shelters and pounds across the country (estimates of purebreds in shelters range from 25 – 40% of all homeless dogs).

The facts and figures surrounding homeless dogs in the United States are horrendous, and heartbreaking. According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, approximately 2 MILLION dogs enter US shelters every year. And it gets worse – statistics gathered by other groups are even higher, sometimes up to 8 MILLION + surrendered dogs every year. When you factor in that it’s estimated that only 1 in 10 homeless dogs will ever be adopted, it’s a truly staggering and tragic picture.

These puppies and dogs are homeless through no fault of their own, and the majority of them will make just as healthy, loving and wonderful pets as any puppy you can get from a breeder.

A purebred puppy from a breeder can easily cost $1000 – $1500 (and frequently more), whereas a purebred, rescued puppy often doesn’t cost more than $300 – $500. A mix-breed homeless puppy will be a lot less, depending on what the individual pound or shelter charges.

There are also other financial savings. When you adopt a puppy from a pound or rescue center, it will most likely be have been spayed or neutered and be up to date on all shots. You may even get extra ‘perks’, such as a discount on training classes or something similar.

Of course, saving money shouldn’t be a major consideration. Much more important is the fact that you could actually, literally, be saving a life! Not all pounds or rescue shelters are able to have ‘no kill policies’ in place and millions of dogs are euthanized every year. This is despite that fact that they’re perfectly healthy, temperamentally sound and want nothing more than a home and family to call their own.

An adolescent/older puppy or dog is more often at risk of being ‘put to sleep’ as they’re passed that ‘cute puppy’ stage. However, these homeless dogs can make superb pets and are easier to take care of, and settle in faster, when they’re given the chance of a new home.

Little puppies are adorable, but they’re HARD WORK and very time and labor-intensive. Even slightly older pups (4 months plus) are easier to housebreak and train than an 8 week old ‘baby’ puppy. Mature dogs (anything over 12 – 18 months) are usually well-mannered, often already housebroken and at least partly obedience trained, and are out of the ‘chewing everything’ stage. All definite pluses!

If you think you could adopt a puppy or dog, and give it a chance at a better life, go to your local City Pound or rescue shelter and talk with the staff about the homeless dogs there. They’re usually very helpful and knowledgeable, and are more than happy to help you pick just the right canine companion.

Obviously, any puppy or dog needs a little time to adjust to a new home and family. But lots of love, attention, patience, toys and a good diet are all they’ll need.

So, go on, give it some thought! Adopting a homeless pup may turn out to be one of the most rewarding things you ever do. The puppy or dog you take home will be one of the lucky ones, but you’ll be lucky too…lucky to have found a loving, faithful four-legged friend to share your life with.

I have a Pet Adoption Contract Form format for download pet-adoption-contract. It can get those adopter information and detail. If useful for person gave away their pet to someone for adoption.

American Miniature Schnauzer Rescue

Posted on 27 March 2009 by petmyforum

Miniature Schnauzer Rescue is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization sponsored entirely by donations.  We are dedicated to the never-ending, sometimes overwhelming, task of saving the lives of abused, abandoned and/or unwanted Miniature Schnauzers who have lost their homes.  Many of our dogs come to us healthy.  Others are sick or injured.  They may come to us from shelters, the streets, from puppy mills or from owners who cannot, or will not, care for them any longer. In almost all cases, at least in their recent past, they have not been loved nor have they felt the security of a loving home.  Our goal is to ensure these fine animals get healthy, never again face life in a dangerous situation and, instead, live in a safe, loving and secure “forever” home!  Until that time, those dogs live in a loving, foster home. Prior to placement, those dogs live in foster homes where they are socialized and cared for until they are adopted into a permanent home.

This listing shows a Rescue contact for most of the local clubs. If there is not a rescue person listed, then contact an officer of the local club and ask about their rescue operations.
